Stamp Duty Update

Transfer duty, or stamp duty as it is commonly called, is payable in Queensland when a person enters into a transaction for the transfer of dutiable property. Examples of dutiable property include land in Queensland, a transferable site area, an existing right, a Queensland business asset and a chattel in Queensland. Transfer duty is calculated according to the value of the dutiable property.

This article will focus on the most common example of a dutiable transaction which is purchasing a home or first home, and will set out the recent changes to transfer duty in Queensland following the 2008-2009 State Budget Announcement.
