Retirement Living
The traditional retirement village concept has been in a state of change ever since the baby boomer generation broached their 50’s. Their changing attitude towards retirement and retirement living will see the average age of retirement residents drop from 72-74 years to early 50’s. This change will see an increase in the number of alternative retirement living spaces making it one of Australia’s top 5 industries by 2010.
From gated communities to manufactured home parks, low cost pensioner units, nursing homes and retirement villages, the laws surrounding this industry have developed significantly over the past 10 years. The Retirement Village Act 1995 is a regulator for all retirement village operations governing the rights and obligations of residents and operators, security of tenure and termination of contracts. Other forms of retirement living are either ungoverned or subject to a mix of Local, State or Federal legislations.
